Senior Officials of the Sri Lankan Embassy discuss with the Jogye Order to promote religious tourism in Sri Lanka

 On 15th December 2021, the senior officials of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Republic of Korea met with Ven. Sun-Do, Vice Director of the Social & International Affairs Department of the Jogye Order which is the largest chapter of Mahayana Buddhism in the Republic of Korea, to revive the strong relationship between Sri Lanka and the Jogye Order, with a  special focus on promotion of religious tourism in Sri Lanka.The Jogye order represents traditional Korean Buddhism which dates back to more than 1,200 years with around 2,000 Buddhist temples in the various parts of the Republic of Korea and the different countries in the world.During the discussions, Ms. Rekha Mallikarachchi, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of Sri Lanka invited a Korean Buddhist delegation to visit Sri Lanka with the purpose of upgrading the Buddhist ties between the Republic of Korea and Sri Lanka, while introducing the famous and sacred religious temples and monuments in Sri Lanka.Ven. Sun-Do expressed his keen interest to elevate the Buddhist relations between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea furthermore, especially by sending a delegation to Sri Lanka including Buddhist monks and the followers, at a mutually convenient time. In conclusion, Ms. Nilanthi K. Pelawaththage, Charge’ d’ Affaires of the Embassy expressed her deep appreciation and sincere thanks for the cooperation and assistance extended by the Jogye order to Sri Lanka over the decades in elevating Buddhist relations between the two countries and assisting the deprived children in Sri Lanka.Ven. Thalgamuwe Dhammakitti Thero who is the Chief incumbent of the Korea – Sri Lanka Maha Viharaya in the Republic of Korea and a Member of the International Exchange Committee of the Jogye Order also participated and facilitated the discussion, on the invitation of the Embassy.
